CSA Week #2

It's Thursday!  You know what time it is!  CSA time!


Yesterday was full of more greenery and you could really tell a difference with all of the sunshine!  Our boxes were full and vibrant!  Let's see what we ended up with...
  • Pac Choi - which is just another way of saying Bok Choy or Chinese Cabbage
  • Braising Greens
  • More Strawberries
  • Green Garlic
  • Head Lettuce
  • Radishes
  • Mixed Salad Greens
Now let's talk about this green garlic.  When I first saw it, I thought "oh leeks!".  But upon further investigation, it was actually green garlic.  What on Earth is green garlic, you ask?


Well it is basically the young, immature garlic that has yet to form any bulb or cloves.  The whole plant can be used, from the white parts, to the lighter green, to even the dark leaves.  Our CSA newsletter said that it's great when used in soup stocks.

Having never used green garlic before, I'm excited to experience it's flavor!  Anybody have experience with this?  Let me know how I should use it!

And I know this is still kind of early in the season, but I'd love to know what you guys are getting from your CSAs and Farmer's Markets right now!  Send me a picture or a link to your blog and I'll post it next week - details below!

  2. I would get anyting to have CSA in our area. Quite a while befor we have fresh Produce around here.Please let us know about Green garlic; never heard about this.

  3. Use the green garlic in any way you would use a scallion. Soups, braises, stir-fries, etc.

  5. We've been getting a CSA box from a local farm for about a year now - best decision ever! Recently, we've been getting the most delicious strawberries ever, and snap peas, which I love! Our CSA company also sends recipes with the box every week, which is nice :D

  6. We were introduced to green garlic last year with our CSA. As someone else mentioned, you use it like you would a green onion. The white part and all of the tender part of the green is edible. It has a stronger, more garlic-y taste than a green onion though but not as strong as mature garlic. I use mine in salad dressings, pesto, or sauteed with mixed veggies on the stove/oven. You really can't go wrong!

    My basket this week had strawberries, collard greens, green garlic, asparagus, spinach (with a red spine), and fresh oregano & tarragon. We've already eaten all the strawberries!
